Ingredients
Scale
8 medium apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
1 can (8 ounces) refrigerated crescent roll dough
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup water
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into 8 pieces
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 (12 ounce) can lemon-lime soda (like Sprite) or Mountain Dew
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Peel, core, and cut each apple into quarters.
Unroll the crescent roll dough and separate it into 8 triangles.
Place one apple quarter near the wide end of a dough triangle. Sprinkle the apple with a mix of sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Roll the dough tightly around the apple piece, starting from the wide end, to completely enclose the apple. Pinch the seams to seal.
Place the wrapped apple dumpling, seam-side down, into the prepared baking dish. Repeat with the remaining apples and dough.
In a small saucepan, combine the remaining sugar, water, butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Bring this mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
Pour the soda evenly over the dumplings in the baking dish.
Pour the hot sugar mixture over the dumplings.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and the apples are tender.
Let the dumplings cool slightly before serving warm with the sauce from the bottom of the pan.
Notes
For a richer sauce, substitute the water with apple juice.
If you prefer a thicker sauce, remove the dumplings after baking and simmer the remaining liquid on the stovetop until it reduces slightly.
Use firm apples that hold their shape well during baking.
