Ingredients
Scale
4 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
2 cups water
1 cup granulated sugar (for syrup)
1/4 cup granulated sugar (for dumplings)
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 cup cold butter, cut into small pieces
1/2 cup milk
Instructions
Combine blackberries, water, 1 cup sugar, lemon juice, and salt in a large saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
While the berries simmer, prepare the dumpling dough. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder.
Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Stir in the remaining 1/4 cup sugar and the milk until just combined to form a soft dough. Do not overmix.
Drop the dumpling dough by rounded teaspoonfuls directly onto the simmering berry mixture. Leave space between the dumplings.
Cover the saucepan tightly and reduce the heat to low. Cook for 15 minutes without lifting the lid. The dumplings will steam and cook through.
Remove the pan from the heat and let it stand, covered, for 5 more minutes.
Serve warm, spooning the syrup and berries over the dumplings.
Notes
For the best texture, do not lift the lid while the dumplings are steaming.
Serve immediately with vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of heavy cream.
If using frozen blackberries, do not thaw them before adding them to the pot.
