Make traditional Southern candied sweet potatoes with a rich brown sugar glaze. This easy recipe is perfect for holiday meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 lbs sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch thick rounds
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange the sliced sweet potatoes in a single layer in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a medium saucepan, combine the butter, brown sugar, water, corn syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  4. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved and the mixture simmers. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Pour the hot glaze evenly over the sweet potatoes in the baking dish.
  6. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, basting the potatoes with the glaze every 15 minutes. The potatoes should be tender when pierced with a fork and the sauce should be thick and syrupy.
  7. Serve hot.

Notes

  • For a topping, sprinkle 1 cup of miniature marshmallows over the potatoes during the last 10 minutes of baking.
  • You can substitute maple syrup for the corn syrup for a different flavor profile.
  • If you prefer a softer texture, cover the dish with foil for the first 30 minutes of baking.
