Make the best homemade applesauce on the stovetop with just a few simple ingredients. This quick recipe yields naturally sweet, cozy applesauce perfect for snacks, side dishes, or baking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 lbs apples (like Honeycrisp or Gala), peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Prepare your apples by peeling, coring, and chopping them into roughly 1-inch pieces.
  2. Place the chopped apples, water, and lemon juice into a large pot or Dutch oven.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
  4. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. The apples should be very tender.
  5. Remove the pot from the heat. Stir in the ground cinnamon and nutmeg.
  6. Mash the apples to your desired consistency using a potato masher for chunky applesauce, or use an immersion blender for smooth applesauce.
  7. Taste the applesauce. If you prefer it sweeter, add a small amount of maple syrup or sugar (optional).
  8. Serve the homemade applesauce warm, or chill it completely before serving as a healthy snack or side dish.

Notes

  • For a no-peel applesauce, simply skip the peeling step. The skins will break down during cooking, though you may need to blend longer for a smoother texture.
  • This recipe is naturally sweet, but if your apples are tart, you can add 1 to 2 tablespoons of maple syrup or brown sugar during the last five minutes of cooking.
  • Store leftover applesauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week, or freeze it for up to three months.
