Make a fusion dinner combining savory sloppy joe filling served on garlic bread or topped with garlic bread elements.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey
  • 1 small yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 8 slices sturdy Italian or French bread
  • 4 tablespoons softened unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground meat and cook, breaking it apart, until browned. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add chopped onion to the skillet and cook until soft, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  3. Stir in beef broth, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, oregano, and basil. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to combine.
  5. While the filling simmers, prepare the garlic bread. In a small bowl, mix the softened butter with garlic powder.
  6. Spread the garlic butter mixture evenly on one side of each slice of bread.
  7. Place the bread slices, butter-side up, on a baking sheet. Broil for 2 to 3 minutes until the edges are lightly golden and the butter is melted. Watch closely to prevent burning.
  8. Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese over the melted buttered sides of the bread. Return to the broiler for 1 minute until the cheese melts slightly.
  9. Spoon a generous amount of the sloppy joe filling onto four slices of the prepared garlic bread. Top each with another slice of garlic bread, cheese-side facing out, to form a sandwich.

Notes

  • For a less messy sandwich, serve the filling open-faced on the garlic bread slices.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or lentils for ground beef to change the protein base.
  • If you prefer a softer bun, lightly toast the bread in a toaster oven instead of broiling.
