Make a single-serving, fudgy chocolate brownie quickly using only your microwave and a standard mug.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 4 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 Tablespoon milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 Tablespoon chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt in a microwave-safe mug. Stir these dry ingredients well with a fork.
  2. Add the vegetable oil, milk, and vanilla extract to the mug.
  3. Mix everything thoroughly until no dry pockets of flour remain. Do not overmix.
  4. Stir in the chocolate chips, if using.
  5. Place the mug in the microwave. Cook on high power for 60 to 75 seconds. Cooking time varies based on microwave wattage.
  6. Check the center; it should look set but still slightly moist for a fudgy texture. If it is still very wet, microwave in 10-second increments until done.
  7. Let the brownie cool in the mug for at least 2 minutes before eating.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, substitute the milk with a splash of strong brewed coffee.
  • If your microwave is very powerful (over 1000 watts), start checking at 50 seconds to prevent the brownie from becoming dry or rubbery.
  • Serve directly from the mug with a scoop of ice cream on top.
