Make crispy, bite-sized chicken coated in a sweet and tangy orange sauce at home using this simple baked recipe.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for tossing)
  • 1 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons cold water (slurry)
  • Optional: Sesame seeds and chopped green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk the egg. In a separate shallow dish, combine the flour, cornstarch, salt, and pepper.
  3. Dip each chicken piece first into the egg, letting excess drip off, then dredge thoroughly in the flour mixture.
  4. Place the coated chicken pieces on the prepared baking sheet. Drizzle lightly with 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil.
  5. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the chicken is cooked through and lightly golden.
  6. While the chicken bakes, prepare the sauce. In a small saucepan, combine the orange juice, sugar, rice vinegar, soy sauce, ginger, garlic, and orange zest.
  7. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Cook for 3 minutes.
  8. Whisk the cornstarch slurry and slowly pour it into the simmering sauce, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon (about 1 minute). Remove from heat.
  9. Place the hot, baked chicken bites into a large bowl. Pour the orange sauce over the chicken. Toss gently until all the pieces are evenly coated.
  10. Serve immediately, garnished with sesame seeds and green onions if desired.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, you can briefly broil the chicken for the last 1-2 minutes after baking, watching carefully to prevent burning.
  • If you prefer a tangier sauce, increase the rice vinegar by 1 tablespoon.
  • Use low-sodium soy sauce to control the overall salt content.
