A recipe for making crispy chicken wings coated in a thick, sticky glaze featuring sweet honey and bright orange flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs chicken wings, separated into flats and drumettes
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup orange juice, fresh squeezed preferred
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons cold water (slurry)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with foil and place a wire rack on top.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the chicken wings with vegetable oil, salt, and pepper.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and cornstarch. Toss the seasoned wings in the flour mixture until lightly coated.
  4. Arrange the wings in a single layer on the prepared wire rack.
  5. Bake for 25 minutes. Flip the wings over and bake for another 15-20 minutes, until the skin is golden brown and crispy.
  6. While the wings bake, prepare the glaze. Combine honey, orange juice, soy sauce, rice vinegar, ginger, garlic, sesame oil, and orange zest in a small saucepan.
  7. Bring the sauce mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Let it simmer for 5 minutes.
  8. Whisk the cornstarch slurry and pour it slowly into the simmering sauce while stirring constantly. Continue to cook for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens significantly. Remove from heat.
  9. Once the wings are cooked and crispy, transfer them to a large, clean bowl.
  10. Pour the warm glaze over the wings. Toss gently but quickly until every wing is completely coated and sticky.
  11. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra crispy wings, you can deep fry them at 375°F for 8-10 minutes instead of baking.
  • If you prefer a spicier glaze, add 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes to the sauce mixture.
  • Garnish with sesame seeds or sliced green onions before serving for color.
