Ingredients
Scale
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 pound ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
1 packet (about 1 ounce) taco seasoning mix
1/2 cup water
4 cups cooked white rice
2 cups shredded iceberg lettuce
2 medium tomatoes, diced
1 cup shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese
1/2 cup salsa
2 tablespoons sour cream (optional)
Instructions
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes.
Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
Stir in the taco seasoning mix and water. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, or until most of the liquid has evaporated and the meat is well coated.
To assemble, place 1 cup of cooked rice in each of four bowls.
Spoon an equal amount of the seasoned taco meat over the rice in each bowl.
Top the meat layer with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and shredded cheese.
Serve immediately with salsa and sour cream on the side, if using.
Notes
For a more authentic flavor, you can mix 1 teaspoon of soy sauce into the meat mixture along with the taco seasoning.
Use short-grain Japanese rice for the best texture contrast with the toppings.
If you prefer, substitute ground turkey or plant-based crumbles for the ground beef.
